Thoughts
We are saved by the mercy of God not by our works of righteousness. Notice it doesn’t say don’t do righteous things just that they don’t save us. In fact this verse assumes we are doing righteous works now that we have been saved. The person made righteous by Christ will begin to live and walk like a righteous person which means doing righteous works. When we received salvation it was entirely dependent on the mercy of God. He gave us a bath and cleaned us from our past. And now we’ve been reborn by the new work of the Holy Spirit inside of us.
