Deeper In the Word – 9/7/12 – Titus 3:5
Titus 3:5 not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit,
1) Washing – Greek word is loutron meaning: A bath, public or private.
2) Regeneration - Greek word is paliggenesia meaning: The coming of new birth because “born again”
3) Renewing – Greek word is anakaínōsis meaning: A new development; a renewal, achieved by God’s power.
We are saved by the mercy of God not by our works of righteousness. Notice it doesn’t say don’t do righteous things just that they don’t save us. In fact this verse assumes we are doing righteous works now that we have been saved. The person made righteous by Christ will begin to live and walk like a righteous person which means doing righteous works. When we received salvation it was entirely dependent on the mercy of God. He gave us a bath and cleaned us from our past. And now we’ve been reborn by the new work of the Holy Spirit inside of us.
