Fifty Days of Prayer for the National Election 2012 – Day 12

Day 12 September 29th
Focus: The Voter’s Choice
Treating faith and religious devotion with contempt, man aspires to be God.
Heavenly Father,
In Your Word You tell us that there are six things which You hate, yes, seven which are an abomination to You. The first two mentioned are haughty eyes and a lying tongue.   (Prov. 6: 16-17)  Man prides himself as being equal to God. He says to himself: “I will go up to heaven. I will put my throne above God’s stars. I will sit on the mountain of the gods,   on the slopes of the sacred mountain. I will go up above the tops of the clouds. I will be like God Most High.”  But those who do not acknowledge You are brought down to the grave, to the deep places where the dead are. (Isaiah 14: 13-15)
Man flatters and deceives himself in his own eyes that his iniquity will not be found out and be hated. He thinks too much of himself so he does not see his own sin and hate it. (Ps. 36: 2)  Man feels secure in his wickedness and says, “No one sees me.”  His wisdom and his knowledge, they have deluded him. Man says in his heart, “I am, and there is no one besides me.’  (Isaiah 47: 10)  Thus You, the Lord GOD, reply, “Your heart is lifted up and you have said, ‘I am a god, I sit in the seat of gods, in the heart of the seas.’ Yet you are but a man and not God. You think you are as wise as a god, but you are a human, not a god. (Ezekiel 28: 2) “Will you still say, ‘I am a god,’ in the presence of your Slayer, though you are a man and not God?” (Ezekiel 28: 9)  Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes and clever in their own sight! (Is 5: 21) For if anyone thinks he is something when he is nothing, he deceives himself. (Gal 6: 3)
We earnestly pray that those who insist that there is no God will be rendered powerless in our nation. For if anyone supposes that he knows anything, he has not yet known as he ought to know; but if anyone loves God, he is known by Him. (1 Cor 8: 2-3) We pray that we will not be wise in our own eyes; we pray we will fear You, LORD, and will turn away from evil. (Prov. 3: 7) For when we see a man wise in his own eyes, we are reminded that there is more hope for a fool than for him. (Prov 26: 12)  We pray against the atheist movement that denies Your existence. We pray against the demonic forces that inspire, marches, billboards, and campaigns to take “God” out of the public square and our civic life.
Scripture says that You oppose the proud but give grace to the humble. (James 4: 6)  Look at every proud man or woman in our government who mock You. You are not mocked; for whatever a man sows, this he will also reap. (Gal. 6: 7) “Proud,” “Haughty,” “Scoffer,” are his names, who acts with insolent pride. (Prov. 21: 24)  Humble the scoffer; and crush the wicked where they stand.  (Job 40: 12) The eyes of the arrogant man will be humbled and the pride of men brought low; You, LORD, alone will be exalted in that day. The LORD Almighty has a day in store for all the proud and lofty, for all that is exalted (and they will be humbled). (Is. 2: 12)
You are glorious in Your character, for in You there is a store of everything that is holy, and good, and lovely. The actions which flow from Your character are also glorious; but while You intend that they should manifest to Your creatures Your goodness, and mercy, and justice, You are equally concerned that the glory associated with them should be given only to Yourself.
There is naught in ourselves in which we may glory; for Who makes us to differ from another? And what have we that we did not receive from You, the God of all grace? Teach us how carefully we must walk humbly before You, LORD!  Since there is room for One Glory only in the universe, the moment we glorify ourselves, we set ourselves up as rivals to the Most High. Therefore, we give You glory and strength; we give You the honor that is due Your Name. “Not unto us, not unto us, but unto Your Name be glory.” Father, we lay our crowns at Your feet, and exclaim, “Not I, but the grace of God which is with me!” We pray that our next President and elected leaders will humble themselves before You and recognize that without You, they can do nothing. (John 15: 5)  We pray this in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
“May the God of Wisdom, Strength, and Power, the LORD of the Armies of Israel, inspire us with prudence in this time of danger; take away from us all the seeds of contention and division, and unite the hearts and counsels of all of us, of whatever sect or nation, in one bond of peace, brotherly love, and generous public spirit. May He give us strength and resolution to amend our lives, and remove from among us everything that is displeasing to Him; afford us His most gracious protection, confound the designs of our enemies, and give us peace in all our borders. Amen.”  (Ben Franklin)
“A watchful eye must be kept on ourselves lest while we are building ideal monuments of renown and bliss here on earth, we neglect to have our names enrolled in the annals of heaven.” (James Madison, 4th President of the US)
