Fifty Days of Prayer for the National Election 2012 – Day 25

Day 25 October 12th
Focus: Congressional Elections
But select capable men from all the people—men who fear God, trustworthy men who hate dishonest gain—and appoint them as officials over thousands, hundreds, fifties and tens. Exodus 18:21

Almighty God,
You are awesome and mighty, lifting up those whom You desire to lift up and putting down those whom You desire to put down. All the peoples of the earth are regarded as nothing. You do as You please with the powers of heaven and the peoples of the earth. No one can hold back Your hand or say to You: “What have You done?” (Daniel 4: 35) You alone, the Most High God, give sovereignty and greatness and glory and splendor. You number the days of every reign and bring them to an end. (Dan. 5: 18, 26) As our nation looks to the elections, we beseech You to move among the people of our country, causing us to desire righteous leaders. May we yearn for godly leaders and, desiring that, may we elect at every level of government those who will honor, serve and obey You in fear and rejoice with trembling. (Psalm 2: 11)

Please give to the people of our nation the spirit of wisdom and discernment that we may be able to study the candidates running for office and see them as You see them. Do not let us be deceived by the “branding”, the marketing, which is designed to make them appealing to our self-interests. We pray for leaders who value the things that You value: life, the sanctity of marriage, integrity, justice, and genuine commitment to Jesus Christ and His saving power. Fill us with the knowledge of Your will through all spiritual wisdom and understanding; may we choose leaders who honor You.

Lord God, our nation is in need of leaders who hold Your values, the spiritual values that advance Your Kingdom in our country and in the world. We pray for congressional leaders who will put aside party politics and work for the good of the people of this nation. May they submit themselves to Your authority to be those leaders Who know Your mind and Your heart for our nation. Your call to leadership always includes Your provision of what they need to lead. By Your grace they can model Your values of deference and humility, but only Your Spirit can plant values deep and strong in their hearts. Help them to respect the people they represent, to be spiritually sensitive, and to sense clearly and powerfully the call and guidance of the Holy Spirit as they work together to right what is amiss.

We pray that our next President will have a deep longing for the future, living the values that will take us there. As he aches for how things can be, infuse the right values in his heart. We claim that he will be an effective leader who will know what really matters to You (not to his own interests), and that his passion will bring us as a nation to unity as we live out our lives before the Living God. We pray this in Jesus’ Name.

The wise in heart are called discerning, and pleasant words promote instruction.
Proverbs 21:16

“God has been pleased to bless our endeavor, in a just cause, with remarkable success. To us upon the spot, who have seen, step by step, the progress of this great contest… we seem to have been treading upon enchanted ground.” (George Mason, 1778, statesman and delegate from Virginia to the US Convention)

We, the people of Missouri, with profound reverence for the Supreme Ruler of the Universe, and grateful for His goodness…establish this Constitution. (Preamble to the Constitution of Missouri)
