Luke 1: 31 And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name Jesus. 32 He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David. 33 And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end.”
Jesus is given many titles by the angel Gabriel. He is called Great, the Son of the Highest, the successor to the throne of David, Ruler over the house of Jacob forever, and King over a Kingdom that will never end. The Kingdom of God was about to be put on full display in the life of Jesus and all of heaven and earth is waiting in expectation.
Luke 1:29 But when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and considered what manner of greeting this was. 30 Then the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. 31 And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name Jesus.
Anyone would be troubled if an angel were to show up and interrupt their daily routine. So of course Mary was troubled and puzzled to receive such a greeting from the angel Gabriel. The angel told her not to fear and that she had found favor or grace with God. The grace of God is not something that comes from within Mary but is something God gives her. Mary is told that she will be with a Child, a Son, and to name Him Jesus which means “God is salvation.”

Luke 1:26 Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, 27 to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. 28 And having come in, the angel said to her, “Rejoice, highly favored one, the Lord is with you; blessed are you among women!”
Six months after the conception of John the angel Gabriel was sent to the city of Nazareth in Galilee. Galilee was often called Galilee of the Gentiles and was not held in high regard by Jews of that day. The angel appeared to Mary who was a virgin promised to Joseph for marriage. It is recorded that Mary was of the House of David and as long as the promise of Messiah was expected it was worth tracking the lineage of David because the Messiah was to come from the line of David (2 Sam 7:12-13). Mary was greatly blessed because she was about to receive the news that she was chosen to give birth to the Son of God, the Messiah whom had been promised from long ago.
